How to Create a Cozy and Functional Living Room

Living rooms serve different purposes for different people. In some homes they serve as the main gathering area for family, while in others they're more of a show room, used only when company comes over.

Arranging Living Room Furniture

  • Like for all interior decorations, create a focal point for the living room and arrange your living room furniture around it. A focal point can be a fireplace, a window, a statue, or even in some cases, a television.
  • Use your living room furniture to create conversation areas. This can be done by putting your sofas and chairs close together so that it creates a comfortable area for chatting. If you have a large living room, you might want to create a few different conversation areas with matching or contrasting furniture. Each conversation area should include not more than one sofa, and/or a loveseat and/or a couple of chairs. Recliners and accent chairs can be used to substitute arm chars. If you have many pieces of living room furniture you might want to split them up into separate conversation areas instead of putting them together for a large conversation area.
  • Don't clutter up your living room with so much furniture that there is no room for moving about.
  • Create a more intimate setting by pulling furniture away from walls.

  • Sofa and Chairs - The most important items in your living room are your seating furniture. Before you start to buy your sofa and chairs, determine the size of your living room first. You don't want to purchase a large bulky set of sofas for a small living room, or a small set for a large room. Scale is the key. For living rooms that have awkward or unused corners, sectional sofa set makes a good choice as it provides ample seating space and yet does not take up too much room. A small sectional sofa set is perfect for a very small living room such as a studio apartment. The styles for sofa and chairs also vary greatly from traditional to contemporary modern. This furniture can be upholstered in various fabrics, or leather. In the recent years, a lot of living room sofa sets are upholstered in faux leather or microfiber material. This furniture closely resembles the actual leather or suede leather furniture, and yet costing only a fraction of the price. Sofas and chairs made from these type of material are usually functional and easy to maintain.

Rug – Using area rugs is a great way to define seating areas, but the number one mistake people make in the living room is using an area rug that's too small. Remember that all of the furniture should be able to comfortably sit on the carpet. If space doesn't allow it, make sure that at least the front legs of any large upholstered pieces are on the rug. (Small pieces like side chairs and tables should always have all four legs on the rug.)

Coffee Table - Coffee tables are practical pieces that are often found in the center of conversation areas. Many of the coffee tables come with matching side tables and console tables or sofa tables. There are various styles and designs to choose from to match your sofa set and overall living room decor. If you also use your living room as a reading or resting place you may want to substitute the coffee table with an ottoman. Today, at Garden2Home.Com, we offer various ottomans that can double as coffee tables with ample storage space. They are comfortable for you to rest your tired legs and yet sturdy enough for you to place your drinks on. There should be enough leg room of 14"-18" between coffee table and your seating furniture.

Side Tables - Side tables are actually very useful tables for any living rooms. Many homes with little children tend to do away with coffee tables to create a wider space for the children or for safety reasons. Side tables become an important tables in the living room, providing not only table tops for drinks, books, decorative accessories, also can be used as lamp tables.

    Living Room Accessories

Once all the major living room furniture is in place, more thoughts should be spend on decorative accessories. It is like, after you have put on your most beautiful evening gown, now it is time to put on your jewelry. A living room without accessories will look bare and uninviting. Living room accessories vary widely from figurines to throw pillows. Visit our Decorative Accessories for your decorative ideas.
